Thinking Tools and PowerLogic PSU - FAIL (UPDATE)

Since time and time again, man has proven the unbreakable truth about the principle of "wear and tear". Even a young child can easily understand that a toy can be broken overtime. That's why mommies out their often keep these toys in display cases and make their sense meaningless.

As we grow older, we initially select the best things to own that will last longer than we expected. Best things doesn't necessarily mean the most expensive and top quality but rather best in what we should expect in terms of its worth. And of course, we tend to be more mature in keeping safe of these toys ourselves.

So much for the freaking intro (a tribute to the first posted fails), let's go on with the very first fail.

COMPANY:
THINKING TOOLS INCORPORATED - SM CITY CEBU

PRODUCT:
POWERLOGIC 600W PSU (Price 650.00 PHP)

SCENARIO:
With no signs of the ever elusive "XMAS BONUS" in sight, i was forced to buy a "generic" power supply unit (psu), for my ever loyal 5year old system unit. It previously ran on another 350w "generic" psu which made the "blue screen of death" come so often when another 320gig sata hardisk installed. The oldie asus p5pgl mobo requires 300w at least, and the things on it are the geforce 6600 gfx, 2gig ram, dvd burner, 320gig sata hd, a useless floppy, 2 front panel usb thingys, and a casing exhaust. My previous system did not have the direct sata connectors and buying a new psu with these connectors would make it a lot safer for the old system.

The 320gig additional sata hd was an overkill for the unit and i was forced to commit something i should have not done. :(

PURCHASE - DATE, TIME, and LOCATION:
November 13, 2011 around 3:30-4:00PM - Thinking Tools Incorporated, SM City Cebu.

Tested the psu with the "short-the-green-and-black-pins-will-turn-on-the-fan" test smelled funny, but technician said its the usual thing to happen (the aroma of giving life to a mechanical baby).

1st FAIL (Installation) - DATE, TIME and LOCATION:
November 13, 2011 around 4:30-5:00PM - My home.

Smoke from the burning insulation of the 5v pin from the psu raised up the air as soon as i turned on the system. I immediately unplugged the cord hoping it would not contaminate the board and other wires. And thank God it did not.

2nd FAIL (Warranty) - DATE, TIME and LOCATION:
November 13, 2011 around 5:15-6:00PM - Thinking Tools Incorporated, SM City Cebu.

TTI took 30mins or so calling the Gods inquiring them if they'll replace the product. "IT WAS LESS THAN AN HOUR WHEN I FIRST EXIT YOUR STORE GODDAMIT!"  An attendant asked me a stupid question: "What did you do sir? Why did it happen?" "WTF! LIKE I KNOW! ASK THE FREAKING MANUFACTURER! What would you expect? Its not plug-and-burn is it?" I was so frustrated when i knew they wouldn't let replace the fail product. They said they have to contact the manufacturer because burnt things in the outside of an item might be the consumer's fault and not theirs. WHOAAAAAAAA, i was handling computers since the late 90's and I know the warranty schemes of the industry. Items are only warrantied if the burnt things are inside the shell, not on the outside. I used to have a burnt IDE drive (was replaced with a new one by PCExpress, thank you) problem caused by a fail psu also from PCExpress(lol). PSU's especially the old ones are expected to burn or explode. But the newly bought? Come on.....

As i was inspired in having the vision of making this blog, i was taking pictures of the fail product. Then suddenly the Security Guard came. He might be thinking of having the big break of his career. Well, "nong sikyo", you're also a fail, controlling my explosion is my forte, better luck next time.

TTI (company): RATING is 4 out of 10
The company as I remembered it has long been proven to be one of the best in Cebu in terms of "customer after-sales  support". Their prices are a bit higher than the other known shops but are tolerable because of the so-called support. The incident still gave me the same assurance feeling as with the other customers i presume. TTI also agreed for me swap for another item, not just psu's, in case the manufacturer says ok for the warranty. WTF? WHAT IF THEY SAY NO????

POWERLOGIC 600W PSU (product): RATING is 0 out of 10

Well, first impression lasts. Im not rich enough to try you again.

CONCLUSION:
PSU selection is critical. Always reevaluate or read reviews on buying generic (generic with a brand name, lol) psu's. For the rest of my life, ill keep away with the PowerLogic. melting rubber on my board is not my thing.
As for the company TTI, the staff are very courteous with the "Sir" thing. But we customers need assurance on the products that we bought. A little warning signs would be nice.

P.S.
If anybody from the Department of Trade and Industry reads this, do we (customers) have a protection about this kind of warranty? The defective, not to mention burning, product was purchased just minutes from making the damages to my computer and possibly myself. It should give the consumer the choice of full refund with the basis of possible damage to property, possible physical injuries, dissatisfaction and trauma. And what if the manufacturer says no? Its like giving TTI an early charity gift for Christmas.

-UPDATE- 11/18/11

In fairness to TTI and the well-mannered crew, I would like to update my readers of what happened with the warranty.

On the next day of the traumatic event which included the "busted" newly-bought psu unit and "buying-another-psu-from-another-shop-coz-TTI-wont-give-me-the-replacent-immediately" incident, someone texted me that the psu's manufacturer said ok for the warranty and TTI approves its replacement with any items available. Still a bit frustrated and disappointed, I needed a refund, 650.00 worth of worthless shopping in my case.

Forced shopping to be precised:

The list includes a 200php Genius mouse, 300+php Cliptec Laptop mouse, and a 200+php Genius Earphones. The total overlapped the 650php margin which i had to pay extra of course. The only thing I brought back to my place was the Genius mouse, the rest I had give away for the simple reason of NOT BEING ABLE TO FIND OUT WHAT TO BUY GODDAMITTTT!!!

But then again, its almost XMas................. (rating is still the same tho)
